Merry Christmas, welcome to death row.

For many dogs in Brownsville, tis the season not to be jolly. They face limited days at the Brownsville Animal Regulation and Control Center. Because dogs are often poor Christmas gifts, shelter groups rarely want to actively take advantage of the Christmas spirit and encourage pets as gifts. But, for responsible owners who have carefully considered dog adoption, thChristmasdogere’s no time to spare if the goal is to save a doggie.

But make sure you have thought it out carefully. About this time last year, a black labrador was adopted from the Brownsville shelter. Where is it today? Back on death row, hoping for yet another chance at adoption because the family that took him last year surrendered him back to the shelter claiming they couldn’t support the dog any longer.

Situations change, especially in a down economy. This is just one of many reasons why dog adoptions cannot get sweep up with the Christmas spirit. Responsible dog ownership is more than a feeling at Christmas, or the perfect gift for the family. Dog ownership is a commitment to that dog’s health and wellbeing for its entire lifetime. This is an expensive and time-consuming commitment.

But it’s one of the most satisfying feelings in the world for those who approach it properly. This Christmas, adopt a dog if you have carefully considered its immediate and lifetime care needs. If not, perhaps it would be better to give a financial donation to the Brownsville Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals instead. Find out how to donate to the BSPCA here. You may not be ready to give a dog a forever home, but you can still help with a donation that will keep other dogs alive until someone else does make the commitment.

And that’s real Christmas spirit.

  1. [...] Many dogs end up in animal shelters and humane societies because they were given as a gift and their owners weren’t ready for the commitment. Read about one unfortunate instance in Brownsville here. [...]
