“Old Dogs” offers little to nothing for dog lovers

Disney has paired actors John Travolta and Robin Williams in this PG comedy directed by Walt Becker (”Wild Hogs,” “Van Wilder”). In the film, Ben, who is played by Williams, enjoys life as a successful businessman until his world is shaken with the return of an old flame, who happens to thrust her twin children into Ben’s formerly blissful life. Ben’s suddenly in charge of the children and seeks help from his best friend and busines buddy, played by Travolta. Actor Seth Green adds further standout moments of comedy.
But why is this a movie dog lovers should see? Apart from a quick glimpse of a canine, the trailer is dog-free–unless you count Travolta’s attempts to flirt with a waitress–and features more penquins and gorillas than mutts. Still the title and the movie poster promise at least some element for dog people–otherwise, why call it “Old Dogs” at all. Let’s hope the movie itself is not the ultimate dog.
It opens in theaters Nov. 25. But be warned: Brownsville-area moviegoers will have to travel at least to the Carmike 20 theater at 3003 S Expressway 281 in Edinburg, Texas, because there are relatively few Rio Grande Valley theaters taking a shot on this film on its opening day.
