A staggering number of dogs in Brownsville are strays or have been abandoned by the owners. The demand for responsible dog owners is increasing every day, as many of the dogs are discarded for minor behaviorial issues–or with no behaviorial problems at all. Many people just find they are too busy or don’t want a dog afterall. If you’re looking for a new dog for the family, consider rescuing one of the many pets in our local shelters and rescue groups.
Brownsville Animal Regulation and Care Center
Website: http://www.cob.us/barcc/
Hours: 1-5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Sunday closed.
Where: 416 F.M. 511, Olmito, TX, 78575
Contact: 956-544-7351
At a glance: The city’s official animal control center in Olmito takes in as many as 40 pets a day, whether they were strays or unfortunate pets surrendered to the center or abandoned by the owners in overnight drop cages outside the front doors. This means many of the animals who enter the facility do not live beyond three days, the minimum time in which the center must legally hold the dogs to allow for an owner to claim the pet.
The up side: Although the center is not a “no-kill shelter,” it does have a small staff of dog lovers who show a high interest in the care and concerns of the animals. They cooperate well with local rescue groups. The facility is clean and well maintained.
Brownsville PAWS
Website: http://www.brownsvillepaws.com/
At a glance: Brownsville PAWS is a small non-profit group dedicated to dogs and cats. Using foster homes, the group provides a no-kill alternative in Brownsville. They match dogs and cats with animal lovers searching for new pets. On weekends, they organize adoption drives in the community, most often at Brownsville’s local PetSmart.
Get involved: The organization is in need of more volunteers, performing a variety of functions–including fostering a pet. The space available for sheltering dogs and cats in foster homes is limited to the number of volunteers working as foster owners. Many adoptable dogs or cats end up at the Brownsville Animal Regulation and Care Center simply for a lack of space in foster homes.
Brownsville Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals

At a glance: The Brownsville SPCA is another non-profit group using volunteers to establish foster homes for dogs and cats in the Brownsville area. Volunteers conduct adoption drives every Saturday and Sunday at the PetSmart in Brownsville.

I had the pleasure of meeting Ryan, who is the site administrator, at the Brownsville Dog Park and I would like to thank him for creating this site. It was about time that the RGV gets something as valuable as this site. If anyone out there has an interest in training hunting dogs, ie; Labradors, Spaniels, Pointers, please send me a quick e-mail. I am an amateur bird dog trainer and would like to share information and training tips with other bird dog lovers, and maybe get some pointers from you as well. Hope to hear from some of you soon.

I was blessed to adopt the most wonderful dog from PAWS. I am not sure what breed she is but she is so sweet and adorable. I also owned a Jack Russell terrier, so when Layla cam along my first priority was that they would get along. It was pretty incredible that they did. In my heart I know that Layla was meant to be with me. She brights up my life and keeps peace in our household. And like Layla many dogs are in need of homes and someone that loves them. It is really a great gift when an animal returns his or her love. It is priceless!!!!!
